We offer lessons to students of all ages. You may be reluctant to try lessons as an “older beginner”, but you are likely to learn just as quickly (or more quickly) than your younger counterpart. That wealth of experience and education will make musical concepts easier for you to grasp. The only thing really holding you back is fitting practice into a busy schedule. If your kids are raised, or you’re recently retired, than you have no excuse. Don’t wait any longer to pursue the hobby that you’ve been putting off for years.

If you have played in the past, and you would like to refresh or improve, we can help with that too. Guitarists can work on a specific style: jazz, folk, classical or country, or they can master better technique. Pianists can take their playing to the next level, and enjoy it more! We really can help with your musical goals, whatever your age. Just schedule those lessons, talk to your instructor, and get started now.

It happens every year. It gets colder outside. We turn on (and up) the heat inside. The relative humidity level in our homes drops from around 60% to around 35% or lower.

Low humidity is very hard on your wooden instruments. The dry air draws moisture out of the wood and the wood shrinks a very tiny bit. This change can lead to frets feeling sharp on the ends as they now stick out a little from the fingerboard, necks might require truss rod adjustments, the glue holding the bridge on acoustic guitars can fail, and cracks can develop in ‘solid wood’ instruments.

If any of these problems develop, we can repair and adjust your instrument and put it back into good playing condition. But you can do a lot to prevent these problems from happening by following three simple steps:

1. Always use a humidifier. Run a room humidifier where you keep and play your instruments. The goal is to keep the room as close as possible to 45% humidity at all times. Also put an instrument humidifier in you case. I use distilled water for in-case humidifiers.

2. Oil dark unfinished woods. We like Guitar Honey and have it here for sale, but a clear wood oil like lemon oil will work too. Use it only on dark unfinished woods such as your acoustic guitar bridge or a rosewood or ebony fingerboard. Wipe some oil with a cloth onto the wood, allow it to soak in for a minute, and wipe any excess off. This helps prevent cracks and will make the fingerboard feel smooth. Never do this to the inside of the instrument, just leave that alone.

3. Your guitar doesn’t want to be where you don’t want to be. Very common sense stuff. Don’t leave your instrument in the attic when it’s super hot, or in the trunk of the car when it’s really cold. When you do take it out to band practice or a gig, take it in first and let it warm up in the case slowly. If the case feels cold, wait to open it. This isn’t so much a humidity issue as it is just a Winter issue.

Taking care of your instrument has many benefits. It will play better, look better, sound better, last longer, and need fewer repairs.
